Character History and Personality: [Ragnar is taken from Season One, post episode six.]

Ragnar's story begins with his wife, Lagertha. Before that, he was a son, a brother, a warrior, a man that bore his armring proudly, yet he was not a husband and not yet a father. Not any woman would do as his wife, he needed a woman that was as strong as he, that was his equal in all ways. One evening he went to her home to profess his love for her, and the story that he told his children was always this: he was set upon by a bear and a hound that guarded her home. The bear he killed with his spear and the enormous hound he strangled with his bare hands.

Whether it was true or not, the outcome was the same: he had gained her hand in marriage. And true to the Seer's prophecy that he would have many sons, his first son -- Bjorn -- soon followed. Gyda came later, a girl to follow in Lagertha's warpath.

And between the children were the raids. Always during the summer and usually to the east, his brother Rollo at his side. Between the raids were the activities that kept their farm running, the sowing and planting of crops, the things, sparring with Bjorn and Gyda, and winter was reserved for things that could be done indoors, when the cold and the snow drove them closer to the fires.

It was in spring that Ragnar met a man, willing to part with two objects. The first, a wooden wheel that floated in water, a spoke rising from it. The second, a rock to determine where the sun was, even on a cloudy day. With them, finally they could sail to the west, where they had not already taken all there was to take.

Disobeying Earl Haraldson, his chieftain, Ragnar had Floki fashion him a new boat for the voyage. They went. Some thought they would die, but others knew that if they went west, if they found something, it would change everything.

They were right. They came back, boat laden with slaves and riches from the monastery on Lindisfarne. The Earl, angry that Ragnar had disobeyed him, took most of the riches for himself and his wife. Ragnar took only the slave, a monk by the name of Athelstan, for himself. Gold could be spent, but he craved the knowledge that Athelstan had of the language, of the people and the geography of England. Where did they keep their riches? Why did they not defend them?

Athelstan knew and once he told Ragnar, Ragnar knew as well. Their riches were given to their church and since no one attacked their churches, since they were the first to do so, they were left undefended. A greedy man would have gone for the gold alone. An ambitious man, eager to put his mark upon the world, would have gone to spread his legacy.

And Ragnar was very ambitious. Ambitious enough that after the Earl decided to attack his farm and all the families that lived there, Ragnar gave his own challenge: single combat, to the death. If the Earl did not accept, he was a coward and would never feast with the Aesir in Valhalla. It was accepted.

He won and in doing so, became the new Earl of Kattegat. The former Earl was buried with full honors according to his station and to the great things he had done in his life. Lagertha was pregnant. All was going well when Ragnar found himself in the head of a man that spoke a different language. A healer unlike any other he had ever known, but one that has piqued his curiosity, as so much did.

And now that healer is gone.
